WHAT IS AGENDA 21?
Agenda 21 is an action plan aiming at taking the balance between development and environment, and implementing “sustainable development”. It reflects a global consensus and political commitment at the highest level on development and environment cooperation.
The full text of Agenda 21 was revealed at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Earth Summit), held in Rio de Janeiro in June,1992.
The Rio Conference, which was accepted as a turning point from the point of environmental action, not only implemented “sustainable development” but also enabled the participant mechanisms and periods to be adopted ( at least paid attention) by the United Nations and all the governments, and the other associations and institutions.
Five International documents, together with Agenda 21, were confirmed at the Conference. Agenda 21, which was one of the best known documents of the United Nations in a short time includes:
